The art of hand writing

Esto es un sobre y una tarjeta para situar a los comensales en la mesa en una cena organizada por Ermenegildo Zegna el el Palazzo Crespi en Milán. Aparte del error al escribir mi apellido, la caligrafía a mano es realmente elegante, y en un mundo donde todo lo hacen las máquinas, encontrate algo así es siempre una agradable sorpresa.

This is an envelope and a table sitting card for a dinner party hosted by Ermenegildo Zegna at the Palazzo Crespi in Milan. Besides the mistake in my surname, the hand writing is really beautiful, and in a world where everything is done by a machine, finding something like this is truly surprising in a pleasant way.

Home Harvest: kitchen (before & after)

Esta es la cocina de mi apartamento. Las dos primeras fotos son de cuando entré a vivir y las tres últimas de cómo está ahora después de la transformación. La cocina era el mayor problema de esta casa: pequeña, anticuada, con aparatos enormes y feos como el tanque calentador del agua y la calefacción. Además, no había sitio para poner un frigorífico grande sin obstruir la ventana que da al salón. Solucioné estos problemas utilizando estores para ocultar los elementos antiestéticos, cambiando los tiradores de las puertas de los armarios por otros más modernos y comprando un frigorífico y un congelador por separado para poner bajo una encimera.

This is the kitchen in my flat. The first two photos show what it looked liked when I moved in, and the three last show what it looks like now, alter the make-over. The kitchen was the biggest issue in this flat: small, old-fashioned, with huge ugly devices like the hot water tank and the heating. Also, it was no room to put a big fridge without obstructing the window connecting with the living room. I solved these problems by using blinds to cover the bad looking elements, changing the handles of the cupboards for some modern ones and buying separate fridge and freezer to go under a worktop.

Seville: glass & mirror workshop

Supongo que esto será una cristalería, donde cortan cristales y espejos a medida, pero no estoy seguro. De cualquier forma es un llamativo y elegante espacio, con esa puerta y ese corredor lleno de espejos de diferentes tipos y tamaños.

I guess this is a place where you can get glass and mirror cut to size, but I couldn't say for sure. It's just a beautiful space, with the door and the mirrors in different shapes hanging on the wall.

Look book design

Una portada interesante para un look book de una marca de moda: Dior Homme presenta su colección otoño/invierno 2009-2010 (titulada Angles) utilizando una tipografía retro en blanco sobre un fondo negro.

Almodovar's secret

Sigo sin poderme creer que nadie se haya dado cuenta de esto antes... He buscado en Internet, pero nada de nada. Me parece que es bastante obvio que Almodóvar versionó el logo de Kores (una empresa que fabrica productos de papelería y oficina) en el cartel de una de sus películas, La flor de mi secreto (1995). No le estoy acusando de nada, en realidad me parece que está haciendo lo que este blog propone: utilizar las expresiones cotidianas del diseño como base para crear otras cosas. De todas formas, me sigue gustando más el diseño de Kores, con esas líneas curvas; Almodóvar lo transformó acercándolo más al estilo de los dibujos de las portadas de las novelas rosas. Me sorprende mucho que Kores no se haya pronunciado al respecto...

I still can't believe nobody has noticed this before… I tried to find something about it in Google, but no trace. I think it’s quite obvious film director Pedro Almodóvar versioned Kores’ logo (a stationary and office products company) in the poster of one of his movies, ‘The flower of my secret’ (1995). I am not accusing him of anything, in fact he has done what this blog proposes: to use everyday expressions of design to create something else. I still prefer the Kores design by far, with those round lines; Almodovar transformed it making it closer to the romantic novels' drawings. I’m quite surprised Kores didn’t say a word about this…

Carlota's cushion

Éste cojín es de mi amiga Carlota, y anteriormente fue de su tía. Tiene un dibujo alucinante que supongo que será de los 70; merece la pena cliquear en la imagen para ver los detalles, especialmente el gato sobre la mujer y los pájaros. Una pena que a Carlota se le fuera la mano con la plancha, como se puede observar...

This cushion belongs to my friend Carlota, and before it belonged to her untie. It has an amazing drawing (I suppose it's from the 70's), you must click on the image to see the details, specially the cat sleeping on the woman's lap and the birds. It's a shame Carlota went too far with the iron, as you can see...

Madrid: straight from the 80's

Esa tipografía en rosa construída únicamente con líneas rectas... Esa chapa metálica con relieve "de palillos"... Ese perfilado de neón... ¡Es 100% años 80! Es la disco Prisma, que aún conserva su antiguo letrero, en la madrileña calle Alcalá, cerca de Ventas.

That pink font built using only straight lines... That metal panelling with a "tooth pick" embossed pattern... That neon outline... ¡It's just pure 80's! A disco that still keeps its old sign in C/ Alcalá, near Ventas, in Madrid.

Another tree design: Isolée

Ya comenté en un post anterior que me encantan las representaciones de árboles. Pues aquí va otro buen ejemplo, el que decora la pared de los baños en el Isolée de la calle Infantas de Madrid. Ahora está pintado en otros tonos, pero me gusta más como estaba antes, como aparece en ésta foto. Éste Isolée fue el primero en abrir, ahora hay otro mucho más grande en la calle Claudio Coello 55. Es un “concept store” que sigue la estela del famoso Colette de París: un snack-café con tienda de ropa, accesorios, revistas, música, productos de alimentación, etc, todo muy selecto y muy cool.

I already mentioned in a previous post that I have a thing for images of trees. Well, here is another good example, featured on the entrance wall to the toilets in the basement floor of Isolée in Madrid, the one in C/ Infantas. This branch was the first to open, but now there's another one -much bigger- in C/ Claudio Coello 55. It's a 'concept store' in the style of the renowned Colette in Paris: café-food-music-fashion-books... All extremely cool and fabulous.

London: color impact

Me encanta la combinación de colores de la entrada de esta casa. El azul agua de la pared crea un precioso contraste con el rojo oscuro de la puerta y de las rosas, cuyos colores coinciden perfectamente reafirmando el efecto total. Un fantástico ejemplo del impactante resultado que se puede obtener jugando de forma inteligente por un lado con el cromatismo y por otro con las flores y plantas. La casa se encuentra en una calle de Notting Hill en Londres.

How amazing is the color scheme in this house's front door? The very light acqua tone of the wall makes a beautiful contrast with the dark red of the door and the perfectly matching roses... Top visual impact. (Spotted in Notting Hill, London).

HOME HARVEST: my lounge (before & after)

La primera foto la tomé antes de mudarme... Es el espacio principal (el salón) de un apartamento en alquiler, sin amueblar. El resto de las imágenes muestran diferentes vistas del mismo espacio, tras unos meses viviendo allí.

The first pic was taken before I moved in... It's the main room of a rented flat, totally unfurnished. The rest of the pics show different views of the same space, in different moments, after a few months living there.

Toy shop metal sign

Esta juguetería de Burgos, aparte de un curioso nombre, tiene un letrero fantástico, hecho de metal (claramente a mano), con esos óvalos atómicos tan "futuristas". No sé de cuándo datará el letrero, pero la tienda fue fundada en el año 1900.

This old toy shop in Burgos (Spain) is called "Chapero", which is quite a shocking name if you consider that apart from "person who works with metal sheets" (which it's probably its original meaning) it also means "male gay prostitute". Besides this curiosity, the sign is just beautiful, made of metal (obviously by hand) with those atomic oval shapes. I can't figure out when the sign was made, but the shop was stablished in 1900.

Madrid: El Rincón

Un café-restaurante con encanto en el bohemio barrio de Malasaña en Madrid, donde puedes tomar un vermú de grifo, un té helado a la hierbabuena casero, tartas variadas y una selección de platos bastante sanos y sabrosos. Hay continuas exposiciones en sus paredes, tienen una zona para los que van con niños y es especialmente agradable su pequeña terraza, en una situación estratégica. Las viejas mesas y sillas (cada una de su padre y de su madre), la magnífica lámpara de araña y las paredes pintadas en azul agua consiguen dar a este lugar un aire muy "La Habana".

A charming "café-restaurant", "gastro-pub" or "bistro" in Madrid's trendy neighbourhood Malasaña, serving tap vermouth, home-made ice tea, pies and a selection of quite healthy and tasty dishes. Art exhibitions, a pleasant terrace and a kids room. Old "mix and match" tables and chairs, a magnificent chandelier and acqua color walls provide a "very Havana" atmosphere.

Madrid: inside the top floor of Palacio de la Prensa

Tras una vista general exterior del Palacio de la Prensa y de ver Madrid desde sus ventanas, descubrimos lo que esconde el último piso (el 15º) de este edificio: un showroom de moda llamado Boy Capel. El espacio es simplemente espectacular, no sólo por las impresionantes vistas, sino también por sus formas arquitectónicas y por cómo está decorado. Mobiliario vintage se mezcla con interesantes piezas de arte, como el panel que se ve en la foto inferior (con la palabra "more"), hecho completamente con alfileres de modista, de esos que tienen la cabeza hecha con bolitas de colores.

After an outside view of Palacio de la Prensa and taking a look at Madrid from its windows, we discover what's inside the top floor (the 15th) of this amazing building: a fashion showroom called Boy Capel. The space is simply stunning, not just because of the impressive views, also because of its shapes and the way it has been decorated. Vintage furniture mixes with beautiful pieces of art, like the panel in the bottom picture (with the word "more"), made entirely of tailor pins, those ones with color ball heads.

Madrid: Palacio de la Prensa building

Este fabuloso edificio con aires neoyorquinos fue construido entre 1925 y 1929 por el arquitecto Pedro Muguruza Otaño para servir como sede social de la Asociación de la Prensa de Madrid. Muguruza lo concibió como un edificio de estilo norteamericano y de carácter multifuncional, ya que además albergaba un café concierto, un cine-teatro, viviendas de alquiler y oficinas.

This fabuluous building looking 'so New York' was built from 1925 to 1929 by architect Pedro Muguruza Ontaño to be the headquarters of Madrid's Press Association. Muguruza conceived it as an American style multipurpose building, in fact it contained a café-concert venue, a cinema-theatre, apartments and offices.

HOME HARVEST: concrete plant pots

Al utilizar flores o plantas para decorar, es fundamental crear un efecto visualmente potente a través de una correcta elección del "contenedor". Ambos elementos deben complementarse y mejorarse el uno al otro, funcionando el conjunto como una obra de arte. En el caso que os muestro aquí, elegí varias piezas o ladrillos de hormigón que encontré en una obra para poner unos cáctus silvestres. En realidad este tipo de plantas quedan bien en muchos tiestos diferentes (desde macetas de terracota hasta calderos de zinc), pero esta es una buena idea, un ejemplo de cómo "reconvertir" objetos. Los cáctus se murieron, pero los cambié por unas sansevieras, que también quedan perfectas (ya os lo enseñaré).

When it comes to plants or flowers intended to decorate, it's fundamental to create a powerful effect by choosing the right container. Both elements must complement and enhance eachother, working together as piece of art. In this case showed here, I chose some concrete pieces or bricks I found in a building site to put some wild cactuses in them. I think this sort of plants look good in many ways, but this is also a good idea, an example of how you can find a new use for something initialy destined to something else. Unfortunately, the cactuses didn't survive, so I swapped them for some mother-in-law's tongues, which also work beautifully (I will show you shortly).

New York: psychic storefront

Por lo visto esto es algo bastante común en muchos lugares, pero me llamó la atención porque nunca había visto nada parecido. Se trata de la consulta de un vidente en Nueva York, quien ha convertido una de sus ventanas en un escaparate para promocionar su negocio. No tiene desperdicio: rótulo de neón, cortinones drapeados, mesita con dos butacas y, por supuesto, la bola de cristal.

Apparently this is quite a common thing in certain places, but it caught my attention because I had never seen anything like it. This psychic in the Big Apple decided to promote his bussiness by turning one of his apartment windows into a display with a straight forward message. It has all the ingredients: neon sign, draped curtains, table and two chairs and, of course, the crystal ball.

Madrid: mosaic in a building entrance

Madrid, como gran capital que es, está plagada de maravillosos portales de todas las décadas, pero creo que los que datan de los años 70 (como ejemplo este mosaico) son especialmente peculiares y destacables. Incluso diría que representan un estilo intrínsecamente madrileño, que encontramos además en otros tipos de edificios civiles y religiosos, bares y cafeterías, mobiliario urbano, estaciones de metro, y a veces en barrios completos. Seguiré poniendo entradas con muestras de este "Madrid 70's style".

Madrid, as a big capital, is full of amazing building entrances from all decades, but I think those ones from the 70's are specially outstanding and peculiar. I would even say they represent a very "Madrilian" style, which we can also find in other types of civil and religious buildings, bars and cafés, urban furniture, underground stations, and sometimes whole neighbourhoods. I will keep posting examples of this "Madrid 70's style".

Hand painted oriental motives

Estos dibujos pertenecen a un biombo antiguo que se vendía en una tienda de El Rastro de Madrid. Están pintados sobre tela, y me parecieron muy graciosos porque tienen pinta de que no los ha hecho un artista oriental, y porque son bastante naïf, o como si hubiesen salido de una tira cómica. (Recuerda que puedes pinchar en la imagen para ampliarla).

These drawings belong to an old folding screen I saw in a shop in El Rastro, Madrid's flea market. They are painted on fabric, and I found them really cute as they are probably not by an Oriental artist, and also because they are kind of naïf, or looking a bit like they came out of a comic strip. (Remember you can click on the image to enlarge).

Dream seafront house

Esta preciosa casa llamada "El ancla" está literalmente en la playa, lo único que la separa de ella es un estrecho camino sin asfaltar y sin acera. La foto de abajo muestra exactamente lo que se ve desde la puerta exterior de la casa. Está situada en Alcocebre, un pueblo en la provincia de Castellón.

This cute house called 'El ancla' ('The anchor') is literally on the beach, just across a narrow path with no pavement nor sidewalk. The bottom picture shows exactly what you can see when standing right outside the house. It's located in Alcocebre, a village in the province of Castellón, on the east coast of Spain.

Stockholm: underground's floor pattern

Este genial diseño pertenece al suelo de una estación del metro de Estocolmo.

This beautiful pattern belongs to the floor of an underground station in Stockholm.

Utilicé el motivo de círculos concéntricos y líneas curvas para jugar a colorearlo por secciones, y el resultado es esta imagen.

I used the design to play with it, and what came out is this colored image.

"That strange déjà vu feeling..."

Hice esta foto en el MoMA, en Nueva York... Aparte del lado simpático y curioso que tiene, me gustaría hacer hincapié a través de ella en las cosas que se pueden aprender en un museo acerca de cómo colocar obras de arte. Presta atención a la forma en que los cuadros están colgados, a la composición y relación entre ellos y con el espacio en el que se encuentran, a cómo están enmarcados y a los colores con los que están pintadas las paredes para hacerlos destacar o crear diferentes sensaciones.

I took this picture inside the MoMA in New York... Besides its funny side, I'd like to use it to put the spotlight on what you can learn in a museum about art displaying. Pay attention to the way pictures are hanging, to the composition and to the relationship amongst them and with the whole space, to the framing and to the colours the walls are painted to enhance the pieces or to create certain feelings.

Madrid: ceramic brick lattice

Las verjas y celosías son elementos arquitectónicos que me atraen bastante, especialmente cuando se utilizan en interiores, para separar ambientes sin reducir visualmente el espacio. Ésta en concreto es bastante grande, y en cuanto a estética es simplemente "de medalla". Sirve de pared exterior a una tienda, lo cual permite que la luz entre generosamente. Está construída con cientos de ladrillos de cerámica blanca en forma de "Y".

Grates and lattices are some architectural elements I really like, specially when used indoors to separate areas without visually reducing the whole space. This lattice is quite large and it looks truly amazing, serving as an outside wall for a shop, which allows plenty of light inside. It is made of hundreds of white molded ceramic bricks in the shape of a "Y".
